Traditional Costumes

The South Tyrolean traditional costume plays a significant role in South Tyrolean tradition. In past times worn as daily clothing, these garments are now artistically tailored and extensively embroidered and worn predominantly to religious celebrations, folk music and dance events or for show. Each village and each community in South Tyrol has its own traditional costume.

Folkmusic bands

The 211 traditional folkbands that perform at concerts, fests and religious celebrations year in and out provide a distinctive and valuable historical monument for South Tyrol.

Herz Jesu Feuer (Sacred Heart Fire)

When Napoleon besieged South Tyrol, the Tyrolean people placed their mother country under the protection of the sacred heart of Jesus. They passed on signs on mountain tops with mountain fires to secretly announce the onslaught. To this day, fires are started at the visible mountain points on the Sunday after the Tyrolean public holiday Herz-Jesu (Sacred Heart Fire) Friday.
