Artisanry

Lace-making

Prettau lace is known far beyond country borders for its exceptional quality. This fine craft served as extra income for women in Tauferer Ahrntal for many decades. To this day, elaborate costume blouses, lace table clothes, mirrors with lace and Christmas tree decorations.

Pine feather embroidery

With the shaft of a peacock feather, the so-called pine feather, ornate decorations are made in belts, wallets and other leather objects. These objects are very popular as gifts for various occasions or as souvenirs.

Woodcarving art

What would South Tyrol be without its traditional woodcarving art? Practiced in all parts of the country, it is the artisans from Val Gardena that have become internationally renowned for their craft. The origins of the craft date back to the 17th century when poor farmers carved wood during the long, hard and secluded winter months of Val Gardena to make toys for their children.

Herb farming

Herb farming in South Tyrol looks back on a very long tradition. To this day, the wonderful climate of our sunny mountain countryside enables the cultivation of more than 120 herbs and spices. South Tyrol has more than 30 quality producers that have joined forces in the Association for South Tyrolean Herb Farmers.

Sheep's wool processing

Natural wool from South Tyrolean sheep stands for incomparable softness. The wool is washed gently in order to retain its previous lanolin and is used to make untreated products such as beds, blankets, skins, wool, carpets and socks.
