I gently blow on Berta’s nostrils and she snorts quietly. We have now got to know each other and are on familiar terms. Then it’s down to some grooming until the dust is combed and brushed away and her coat shines again. She likes that, and we are friends. I carefully put on the blanket and saddle, and the mare lets herself be harnessed. She’s looking forward to the ride as much as I am. The other horses and riders are ready too, and we set off.
Over hill and dale…
The forest road rises up gradually through the evergreen wood and the horses’ hooves clip clop in time with the symphony of the trees. I enjoy the mild morning air, the clear sun, the striking blue skies. The mountain pasture that we’re aiming for appears on the horizon, but we still have a wonderful ride ahead that I want to make the most of.
…over rough and smooth
The path gets narrow, and to the right it goes down steeply – yikes! Unflinchingly, our Haflinger ponies place hoof in front of hoof – after all, they grew up in the mountains and on these pastures. As foals they played in places where there were no paths and the terrain could get quite rugged! Inexperienced riders need not worry, as Haflingers are reliable ponies. On their way from stocky workhorses to versatile free time companions, they have not lost their surefootedness and
patient, placid characters.
Heavenwards
We are coming up to the stretch where the ponies break into a gallop and they know this. We fly over the soft meadows, their manes blowing in the breeze, hearts beating … hooray! Breathlessly, we arrive at the mountain hut, where we take a well earned break involving refreshments.
Then all you need is the right accommodation and you can go galloping off on your dream holiday!
Fun and spears in honour of Oswald
Haflinger ponies have the chance to show their good characteristics every year at the Oswald von Wolkenstein Riding Tournament (for information please write to info@ovwritt.com). The minstrel of old, Oswald von Wolkenstein, is always there in person to open the games and crown the winners. Horse and rider have to be agile and quick. Nevertheless, often the successful interplay between the four-person team is what clinches victory. The start is at Trostburg castle, then the ride goes from tournament to tournament: from ring jousting at Kastelruth, to the labyrinth at Seis, to the gallop with obstacles at Völser Weiher lake to the ride through posts at Prösels, where there is much celebration right after the victory ceremony.
Treat yourself to a short holiday at the end of May.
