Snowy mountains, a thirst for adventure and pure winter romance: blogger Sabine especially loves winter! :-) In our latest blog post she tells you why, and why a winter holiday here in South Tyrol is particularly worth your while.

Five reasons not to miss winter in South Tyrol

Winter – the quietest, most romantic and perhaps most scenic time – at least for myself! I am so pleased that a winter holiday in South Tyrol is finally a possibility again this year! And, in this post, I will tell you why it is also guaranteed to be worth your while! ;-)

1. South Tyrol, a winter wonderland
It doesn’t actually matter exactly where you spend a winter holiday in South Tyrol. All of the holiday regions – the wintry Vinschgau Valley, Meran and its surroundings, Bozen and its environs, the Eisack Valley and the Dolomites region – all have their own charm! The landscape of mountains and valleys offer picturesque views, unforgettable impressions and, above all, plenty of variety! Valleys where you have the feeling that winter lives there... glittering ice that covers fabulous mountain lakes... magical, snow-covered forests, marked with the traces of their denizens – and, of course, the gigantic two- and three-thousand metre peaks, towering in their white mantles. The stunning natural world of South Tyrol awaits you in winter – so don’t forget your camera! ;-)

2. Variety and yet more variety!
The varied landscape means that there are also lots of different activities to try out in the cold months in South Tyrol: skiing, snowboarding, tobogganing, cross-country skiing, ski touring und snowshoe excursions in one of the numerous ski resorts, ice skating and ice sailing on the frozen waters across the land, or romantic winter rides in a horse-drawn carriage through the villages and towns – there is something here for every taste, for large and small and for every sporting desire! ;-)

3. Sustainable holidays
South Tyrol makes it possible to enjoy a holiday without a guilty conscience! There is sustainable skiing to be found in Carezza, for example – the ski resort in the Eggen Valley was the first local ski resort to join the Climate Neutrality Alliance, with e.g. water for its snowmaking facilities drawn from its own storage basins.
The events that take place here are so-called “Green Events”, just like South Tyrol’s Christmas markets and many of the other events held in South Tyrol!
There are numerous car-free holiday resorts and zones. In addition, South Tyrol now also has an excellent, extensive and well-connected transport network: its trains, cable cars, buses, shuttle services and the Mobilcard all allow holidaymakers to leave their car safely at home. The Mobilcard can be obtained directly from the landlord or can be purchased at tourist association offices. Regional, seasonal and high-quality food is also a vital part of sustainable tourism – and tastes delicious, too! ;-)

4. Picture-book towns and villages
If you think of the winter towns and Christmas markets, fairytale images from children’s books automatically spring to mind! I think that South Tyrol’s towns and villages are just like that in winter and at Christmas. :-) Houses decorated with lights, gentle music in the alleyways, the scents of mulled wine or punch and Christmas stalls where all sorts of traditional items are on sale – Christmas kitsch in a class of its own! :-) And, should snow then fall, the picture-book effect is complete.

I am sure that you too can think of many more reasons for a winter holiday in South Tyrol! In any case, I wish you great fun skiing and frolicking in the snow! :-)

Yours from the heart, Sabine.
