Warm days just perfect for hiking, lakes for taking a refreshing dip in and mild, quiet summer evenings. That’s what a holiday in South Tyrol is all about … wait a minute! Quiet summer evenings? This can be arranged, but summer time is party time in South Tyrol! And that’s why things start to ‘hot’ up in July and August, in both senses of the word.

The party’s on

We’re not just talking about one or two folk festivals that you might stumble across by chance. Even the tiniest mountain villages hold their own village fairs, small fêtes or festivals as a chance for people to get together, share a bottle of wine and eat local fare like freshly made ‘Strauben‘ funnel cakes. The party usually gets off to a flying start and there’s lots of laughter, joking and dancing. A band adds to the festive atmosphere by playing a wide range of hits to sing along to – and then there are the typical ‘thigh-slapping’ dancers in lederhosen or ‘whip-crackers’ expertly doing their stuff.

You’ll be hard pressed to find a more authentic glimpse of culture here in South Tyrol. Local traditional music bands, fire service volunteers, sports and other local clubs enjoy organising their own fairs, whether on a large or small scale, and may often be seen sporting their traditional costume. Don’t be afraid of starting up a conversation with the organisers – they’ll be only too happy to let you know why their festival is the best for miles around.

For your ears, mouth and heart

Festivals taking place in the various towns around South Tyrol are also worth a visit. They feature rows and rows of stalls where associations serve tasty regional and traditional fare, as well as putting on entertainment.

Whether it’s jazz, folk or pop music, you’ll be constantly making new discoveries on a wander down the alleyways: for your ears, mouth and heart. Experience the festive mood in Bruneck and the intoxicating atmosphere of Bozen’s old town (for more information write to info@bolzano-bozen.it).

So we have mild summer evenings – yes! But quiet – not really. Get into the wine and waltzes and experience the contagious festive mood in South Tyrol up close!

You’ll find a general look at some festivals here, or visit the local tourist office where you’re staying.
