The Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site is THE place for snowshoe hikes, winter walks and slope-side adventures – a sustainable winter wonderland between Rosengarten, Latemar and Carezza that only leaves green footprints, even in the deep snow!

The white winter wonderland that thrives on being green

The Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site not only gleams snow-white in the winter season but green as well. And I don’t (just) mean the lush Alpine meadows and forests beneath the blanket of snow. This holiday region’s ski areas and hospitality businesses are committed to environmental friendliness, even in winter.

Get around without a car
The Eggental Dolomites, together with Obereggen and Carezza, are excellent role models when it comes to climate neutrality. They have been successfully trying to reduce their carbon footprint for years, for example, by using green electricity and sustainable transportation.

Here, public transport and the Mobilcard, or one of the numerous shuttle and ski buses, whisk you – car-free and in total comfort – through the stunning natural landscape to the cable car stations in the valleys. And from there, you ascend to where the winter fun begins: for example, you can take the new convertible cable car from Tiers or the ‘King Laurin’ cable car from the Frommer Alm up to the snow adventure SkiArea Carezza-Karersee. Or take the Oberholz, Obereggen or Ochsenweide lifts – to name just a few – on the various slopes of Ski Center Latemar. In any case, you can look forward to countless kilometres of pistes – and to getting around comfortably with zero emissions!

A winter wonderland for people and nature
But sustainability cannot and must not be limited to transportation or to a single location. We can only preserve natural habitats – in which we humans are merely guests – for future generations if efficient sustainability concepts are extended to all other areas of life throughout the year. In the Cortina Charter (2016), the Dolomites UNESCO Foundation, together with its members, set itself the goal of creating all the prerequisites for sustainable tourism in the Dolomites holiday region. For this reason, the entire Dolomites holiday region strives to eliminate plastic, promote eco-friendly transportation, use local products and green electricity, and apply energy-efficient snowmaking and preparation techniques. The result? A vast winter wonderland that is aware of its responsibility to preserve these unique natural treasures. A place for the whole family to experience and enjoy!

You, too, can make a positive impact:
When you are out in nature, take a few important guidelines to heart in wintertime – both on and off the slopes:

- Avoid using your car as much as possible, and try to be plastic-free. Dispose of any rubbish properly.
- Stay on signposted paths to avoid disturbing plants and animals, and keep your voices down.
- Follow signs for your own protection.
- Keep your dog on a leash.
